The iconic “Astra” Department Store and a multi-block church from the 1980s are two landmarks, visible from the broad street known as Gądowianka, of an extraordinary neighborhood (located among Skrzydlata, Lotnicza, and Balonowa streets) in Wrocław, where time seems to have stopped in the 1990s. Here you will find a modernist pavilion of a former post-German airport, which seems, by local standards, aesthetically boring.

The colorful housing estate, full of postmodern aberrations, called “cosmos” (from the name of one of the streets: Cosmonauts’ Street) captures the vivid style of the 1990s on a scale not seen anywhere else in the city.  The Daedalus and Icarus (!) boulevards, esplanades, geometric details, and service pavilions create an unusual atmosphere in this part of the city, where there are surprises around every corner. This town within a city has even got its own skyscraper.

Further west, the more contemporary estates encroach on inter-block spaces and previously undeveloped meadows. The Aviator Park and Pod Skrzydłami estates are visually calmer, devoid of strong detail and ambitions to compete with their predecessors. Gądów Mały will become a space for us to explore the aesthetics of the 1990s and 2000s and of the contrasting, current architectural solutions.
